(KAIR)--Fire Safety Week is underway now through Saturday, and the State Fire Marshal, in a partnership with Safe Kids Kansas, is reminding families that just a little bit of planning can make a big difference.
State Fire Marshal Doug Jorgensen says most fires occur between 11:00 at night and 7:00 in the morning while people are sleeping, meaning it's important to ensure that there are working smoke alarms throughout the home.
Having an escape plan is also a must. Cheri Sage, Director for Safe Kids Kansas, recommends going over an escape plan with your children so they know exactly what to do in a fire emergency. She says that if drills are practiced with children, they are more likely to do just what they have practiced. That includes getting down low, and to find that exit out of the house to a safe meeting place. She advises making sure your children know exactly where that meeting place is.
Sage adds that parents should also teach their kids basic fire safety. They should know that fire is not something to play with. You should also keep your matches and lighters safely out of reach of your children.
Sage also recommends that you have your kids with you when you test your smoke alarms. That way, they will become familiar with the sound and are able to react in case of an emergency.
