Nemaha Co Proceeds with New Jail
10/07/2014

(KMZA)--The Nemaha County Commission has voted to move forward with the construction of a new 34-bed jail.

The Commission on Monday accepted a total bid of $4.568 million for construction of the 15,000-square-foot facility.

Jerry Stallbaumer with AHRS Construction, which is serving as construction manager at risk on the project, said bids were opened September 16th for the construction of the new jail addition, which is to be attached to the current county Law Enforcement Center.

Commissioners plan to finance the project through existing capital outlay funds.

The current 15-bed jail was built in 1978.

Sheriff Rich Vernon says the lack of room, security and safety issues, antiquated plumbing and an outdated design combine to the make the current jail inadequate for use.
