Atchison Makes Changes To Leaf Collection Policy
10/08/2014

(KAIR)--The city of Atchison is making changes to how they collect leaves from residential properties ahead of the upcoming autumn season.

In recent years, residents could push their leaves into the street and city workers would come by and collect them. However, City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says that this method has caused quite a few problems for the city. If leaves are pushed into the street when it rains, they can cause city sewers to be clogged.

Pregont says the new method will alleviate these problems, though it will require some help from the public. Residents are now being asked to utilize the city's solid waste and recycling division special pickup program. This year-round program is available to anyone who wants to schedule a pickup of their leaves and other yard wastes, simply by calling the city shop. However, waste must be placed in either bags or a hard sided container.

Pregont says if there is significant opposition to the new plan, officials can look at putting a more sophisticated piece of leaf collection machinery into a future budget, but at this point, they are planning on evaluating this change to see what kind of impact it may have.
