(KTNC)--Grain haulers will be allowed to transport corn, soybeans, and other crops at heavier than normal weights on Missouri roads.
As recent heavy rain and muddy fields have hampered farmers' ability to get into the field for harvest, the Missouri Department of Transportation has agreed to the request from Missouri Department of Agriculture Director Richard Fordyce to allow the heavier loads.
The move allows private and for-hire carriers may carry up to 10-percent more than their licensed weight. The heavier loads are not allowed on Interstate highways.
Overweight permits are not required for these slightly overweight loads, but all other traffic and motor carrier regulations remain in place. The waiver is in effect through midnight on Sunday, December 12.
While the waiver is in place, carriers are limited to a loaded gross weight no more than 10-percent above the licensed weight of the vehicle. Loads can be transported only within the state of Missouri. Drivers must obey all posted bridge weight limits. Drivers also must restrict their speed to no more than 30-miles-per-hour when crossing a bridge and must center the truck between two lanes of the bridge and yield to oncoming traffic.
