(KLZA)-- LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska is seeing a continued surge in independent voters as Tuesday's election nears, but Republicans continue to hold a giant registration advantage in the conservative state.
The Nebraska secretary of state's office says the number of registered nonpartisan voters has grown more than 11 percent between the last non-presidential election and this year. Republican registrations have increased less than 2 percent, while the number of registered Democrats has declined.
About 48 percent of registered Nebraska voters are Republicans, while Democrats account for nearly 31 percent. Independent voters make up 20 percent.
Tuesday's election includes contests for governor, U.S. Senate, a minimum wage ballot measure and a competitive U.S. House race in Omaha.
Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale predicted last week that statewide voter turnout will hit 50 percent.
