Local Finalists Named in Student Business Contest
01/26/2015

(KNZA)--Fourteen local students are named as finalists in the Washburn University Tri-County Challenge, established to encourage high school students to pitch and implement a new idea, or innovation, for an existing business.
All fourteen finalists, some partnered in pairs, will receive $500 per project to bring their business ideas to fruition.
The challenge was open to all high school students in Brown, Jackson and Nemaha Counties.
Last fall, the students pitched their ideas to a panel of local businessmen and women, and then uploaded a three-minute video of their pitch, which was submitted to Washburn University. The finalists were then selected by professors from the School of Business .
Named as finalists are the duos of Austin Bigham and Ethan Pierce, and Annie Weingart and Lauren May, all from Hiawatha High School, along with Annie Davis and Katy Holthaus, of Nemaha Central High School, and Camden Wenger and Fargo Nichols, of Sabetha High School.
Individual finalists are Aubrey Wright, of Hiawatha High School; Daryan Small, of Horton High School; Bailey Hundley, of Nemaha Central High School; Larisa White and Madison Williams, both of Sabetha High School; and Corinne Haverkamp, of Wetmore High School.
In April, the finalists will travel to the Washburn campus to share their results.
At that time, Washburn will award the winner, or winners, a $2,500 scholarship to the Washburn University School of Business.
A total of $10,000 will be awarded to the top projects.
