ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - A St. Joseph man has been sentenced to probation for stealing prescription pills and cash from the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department.
Online court records show 28-year-old Brett O'Dell was sentenced last week to two seven-year sentences for theft/stealing and possession of a controlled substance. The St. Joseph News-Press reports he was given a suspended execution of sentence and placed on five years of probation.
O'Dell pleaded guilty to the charges in November.
The probable cause statement says O'Dell told a Missouri State Highway Patrol sergeant he had stolen numerous pills from evidence bags secured in the department's evidence vault. He also admitted to removing more than $5,000 in cash from evidence.
Besides probation, O'Dell also must surrender his peace officer licensing, pay restitution and attend an addiction treatment program.
