Unemployment Up in Area NEK Counties

(KNZA)--Unemployment was up in area northeast Kansas counties in January compared to the month before according.

According to figures released Friday by the Kansas Department of Labor, Atchison County had the highest jobless rate at 6.4 percent while Nemaha County had the lowest jobless rate at 2.7 percent

Elsewhere, Brown County’s unemployment rate in January stood at 4.3 percent; Doniphan, 4.6 percent; Jackson, 4.5 percent, Jefferson, 5.4 percent; Leavenworth, 5.4 percent, Marshall, 3.3 percent and Pottawatomie County, 4.3 percent.

All the figures were up from December, but down from January 2014.

Statewide, the jobless rate held steady at 4.2 percent in January.  That’s significantly better than the 4.7 percent reported in January 2014.

The state said more than 1.1 million Kansas residents held private-sector jobs in January-- about 17,100 more than in January 2014.
