(KMZA)-- A state of local disaster emergency has been declared for Nemaha County due to recent flooding caused by heavy rain.
The County Commission adopted a resolution Monday declaring the disaster emergency and possibly qualifying the county for state and federal disaster assistance.
County Road and Bridge Supervisor Dennis Ronnebaum estimated damage to bridges in the county at more than $480,000. He said a bridge north of Wetmore and another near Woodlawn both suffered extensive damage. In addition, Ronnebaum said roads and other structures were damaged. Ronnebaum said most of the damage was in the southern portion of the county.
Last Friday, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a disaster proclamation for 44 counties in the state—including Nemaha—that will make the counties eligible for federal money to recover from damages to public infrastructure caused by recent storms and flooding.
Brownback said the state is still assessing damage and will work with federal authorities to get disaster assistance.
