(KNZA)--A July 24th preliminary hearing has been set for a St. Joseph man charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter.
48-year-old Hank Cooper made his first appearance in a Buchanan County courtroom Tuesday.
Cooper is charged in the death of 36-year-old Robert Martinez. Police responded to the 14-hundred block of Penn Street June 27th to find Martinez seriously injured from an alleged assault. He was transported to Mosaic Life Care where he died later.
According to court documents, Cooper is accused of striking Martinez multiple times with his fists and hitting him with a wooden pole.
Cooper plans to apply for a public defender. A counsel status hearing is set for July 17th.
Cooper remains in custody on a $100,000 bond.
