(KNZA)--The green light has been given to an 8-man football program at Wetmore High School beginning with the 2015-16 school year.
Prairie Hills USD 113 Superintendent Todd Evans says the Board of Education Monday evening on a 4-2 vote approved the proposal received last month from a committee of Wetmore patrons and community members. It included significant fund raising by the community to provide the revenue required beyond what the district had already been spending for Wetmore students to participate with Centralia.
The program will begin with a junior varsity team this fall and then varsity team in two years because of Kansas State High School Activities Association regulatioins.
Board members Kent Saylor and Kathy Lippert voted against the proposal. In voting no, Lippert said she felt it's inappropriate to cut academic programs, Power Hour, and increase the Kindergarten class size and then vote to start a new sports program when there are sports programs available for students to participate in.
The proposal comes after the Vermillion USD 380 Board of Education voted in May to discontinue the football cooperative between Centralia High School and Wetmore High School, effective with the 2016-17 school year.
In other business, Ed Reznicek was elected as board president for the 2015-16 school year and Lippert as vice-president.
