(KMZA)--A Peoria, Illinois-based company will provide medical care for inmates in the Nemaha County Jail.
On the recommendation of Sheriff Rich Vernon, the County Commission Monday approved a contract with Advance Correctional Healthcare for an annual cost of just over $26,000.
Commmissioners were told the decision to contract with the company will release the county from much liability, and Vernon said one of the biggest advantages is that most inmates will be treated in-house. He said currently if an inmate complains of a medical issue they are taken to the local hospital, which creates a safety issue for both the inmate and public.
Advance Correctional Healthcare representative Art Rose said the company will contract with a doctor and a nurse, stating that the doctor will come to the jail every three weeks while the nurse will visit for three hours a week. In addition, Rose says there will be doctors on-call on a 24/7 basis and the company will provide inmate medications and prescriptions.
The company currently works with several local counties, including Atchison, Brown and Jackson.
