Nemaha Co Increases Student Loan Allocation
10/28/2015

(KMZA)--Nemaha County will increase it’s allocation for a state program that helps new residents repay their student loan debt.

The County Commission Monday approved a resolution that increases the amount allocated for the Rural Opportunity Zone Program from $15,000 a year to $30,000 a year for 2016-2018.

The program, started by the Kansas Department of Commerce in July 2011, offers student loan repayments of up to $15,000 over a five year period for those who move to a qualifying county.  Half the cost is covered by the state, with the county responsible for the remainder.

In addition, the program offers income tax rebates to people who move to a qualifying county after not living in Kansas for at least five years.

In other business, Nemaha County United 4 Youth board chairwoman Jessica Atwood met with the Commission to update them on their activities and request continued financial support from the county.  Atwood also announced that the organization has hired Sarah Renyer, of Sabetha, as director.

County Attorney Brad Lippert informed Commissioners he has hired DeeAnn Fangman to fill the open secretary position his office.  Fangman will begin work December 14th.

Also Sheriff Rich Vernon introduced new deputy, Kenny Miller, to Commissioners.
