Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are mentioned frequently in today’s news headlines. Two consumer advocacy groups, Kansas Farm Food Connection and Kansas State University’s Food for Thought invite those wanting to learn more about this hot topic to K-State’s campus Thurs., Nov. 12.
The event will provide an opportunity to discuss GMOs with a panel of experts.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in Justin Hall room 109 with a showing of the film Farmland. Farmland is directed by Academy Award-winning director James Moll and follows five farmers and ranchers as they raise vegetables, pigs, cattle and fruit.
Following the film is a GMO panel featuring Dr. Kevin Folta, professor and chairman of the horticultural sciences department at the University of Florida. Dr. Folta is a renowned expert on GMOs and from 2007 to 2010 he helped lead the project to sequence the strawberry genome.
Also featured on the panel is Bob Mertz, Riley County farmer who grows GMO crops, and Annie Carlson, a North Dakota farmer who uses non-GMO seeds. The panel will answer audience questions about food production, science, technology and global hunger.
Free bacon samples will be provided to attendees courtesy of the Kansas Pork Association.

The mission of Kansas Farm Food Connection is to share the exciting story of Kansas agriculture by connecting farms to families and families to farms to learn, eat and grow together. To learn more, visit http://www.raisingkansas.com or Facebook.
