(KAIR)--A body has been recovered from the Missouri river near Atchison.
That word Thursday from Atchison County Emergency Preparedness Director Wes Lanter.
The recovery comes following an extensive search for a man who reportedly disappeared in the river at Saint Joseph early Wednesday morning.
Lanter tells MSC news the body has been turned over to law enforcement, and he can not confirm whether or not the discovery is related to the Saint Joseph investigation.
Lanter says the Atchison County Rescue Unit was called to assist the search of the river Wednesday evening, using the unit's rescue boat. “We responded [Wednesday] and searched the river from about 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.,” Lanter tells MSC News. “Again [Thursday] morning there was a call that a body had been located on the river so we responded.”
Lanter says the body was recovered around 10 miles north of Atchison, just minutes after 10 a.m.
The recovery effort was assisted by a deputy from the Atchison County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Jack Laurie says the body has been transported for an autopsy.
The search effort was initially launched after a woman, in the early morning hours of Wednesday, notified Saint Joseph Police that she and her friend were swimming in the Missouri River, near Riverfront Park, in downtown Saint Joseph, when he went underwater and did not resurface.
