(KAIR)--A traffic violation in Atchison escalates to a police pursuit landing one behind bars.
It happened Monday morning at about 11:00.
“An officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the 900 block of Kansas Avenue for a traffic violation,” said Atchison Police Lieutenant Tim Stout. “The driver of the vehicle identified as William Gehring failed to stop and a brief pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended in the VFW parking lot where Gehring struck a wooden post.”
Stout said Gehring proceeded to flee the vehicle on foot but was caught a short distance away in a wooded area.
Stout says the officer had attempted to stop the 39-year-old Morrill resident for a cracked windshield before the chase occurred.
He was arrested on charges of fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving and interference with a law enforcement officer as well as a district court warrant for probation violation.
Gehring was taken to the Atchison County Jail where he remains, held without bond.
