Ballfield Renovation Project Advances
10/19/2016

(KNZA)--A ballfield renovation project at Hiawatha’s Bruning Park moves forward.

The Hiawatha City Commission this week accepted the lone bid received from Aller’s LLC, of rural Hiawatha, in the amount of nearly $8,500 for laser leveling of the fields, which involves reshaping the fields so they drain properly.

The Hiawatha Softball and Baseball Associations will help pay for the  work.

City Administrator Mike Nichols says drainage is the biggest problem at the ballfields.  He says currently when it rains one inch or less it pools up, making the fields unplayable.

New clay surfacing was installation on the fields earlier this year as part of a more than $318,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded to the city for improvements at Bruning Park, but it didn’t include the actually dirt work.
