Several cows were killed after a train hit the trailer they were in at a crossing on southeast Nebraska road. The Nemaha County, Nebraska Sheriff’s Department says 75-year-old Edgar Bredemeier of Stella was driving a truck pulling a stock trailer on 721 Road, when a northbound Union Pacific locomotive struck the trailer Monday morning. The trailer was totaled in the collision, and 10 of the 11 cows in the trailer were either killed directly in the crash or were put down due to injuries. Authorities estimate total damage to the truck, locomotive, and animals exceeded $117,000. Nemaha County Sheriff Brent Lottman says the crossing is marked with railroad crossing signs and yield signs. Bredemeier was not injured, however he was cited for failing to yield to the oncoming train.
