Legion baseball season continued last night with five of the Northeast Kansas League teams in action, four of them in action against each other. For to date NEK League standings (click here) or see below.

Holton Falls in Pair of One-run Games to Falls City

Holton went on the road for a double-header against former Northeast Kansas League opponent Falls City. Andrew Riescheck and Cooper Zeller both pitched solid six innings for Holton but they came up short by one-run both times, as Falls City won 2-1 and 3-2.

Holton fell to 3-7 (2-1 league) with the losses and will turnaround for a matchup at home tonight as they play host to league opponent, Sabetha at 8:00pm (Jr. Legion before at 6:00pm).

Seneca Beat Hiawatha after 7-run inning

In a make up game that was postponed back on May 30th, Hiawatha traveled to Seneca for a league showdown on the diamond. After two innings both teams were scoreless, but that would change in the third inning. Hiawatha would strike first in the game tallying one-run in the third, but leaving the possibility of more on the base pads, as they had the bases loaded with no-outs. Brendan Steele knocked in the run for Hiawatha in the third. Hiawatha's lead didn't last long as Seneca plated two-runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

After that Seneca opened up the game in the fourth with a seven-run inning, to ultimately take the game 9-1 by run-rule after five innings. Hiawatha threatened to score every inning having a base runner in scoring position but were only able to plate one-run on five hits. Dalton Lehmkuhl, Jeff Costa, Taylor Jacobsen and Ryker Smith each joined Steele with a hit for Hiawatha on the night.

Alex Hermesch went the distance for Seneca pitching all five innings giving up one-run on five hits and a walk, while recording three strikeouts. Seneca's offense tallied seven hits, with no player notching more than one-hit in the game. Dylan Kramer and Eric Huerter each finished the night with two RBI's, to go with their hit apiece, while Michael Rottinghaus scored two runs scored with his one-hit.

Hiawatha falls to 0-10 (0-7 league) with the loss and will try for their first win of the season on the road tonight versus Doniphan County at 8:00pm (Jr. Legion before at 6:00pm). While Seneca moved to 7-3 (4-3 league) with the win and will play tonight, also on the road at Atchison at 7:30pm.

Sabetha Remains Undefeated in League Play with Win Over Doniphan County

Sabetha remained the only undefeated team in Northeast Kansas League play with their 8-1 victory at home last night over Doniphan County.

Doniphan County struck first in the game capitalizing on some early walks and a two-out RBI hit by Cody Bennett, to take a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the first inning. Sabetha would tie the ballgame up in the bottom half of the inning by scoring on a wild pitch, by Doniphan County pitcher, Colton Masters who gave up six runs on four hits, as the starter.

After the early struggle by Sabetha pitcher, Graham Droge, allowing the one-run, a hit and walking four of the first eight batters he faced, he settled in to a solid pitching outing, earning himself and his team the win. Droge, sat down the next five Doniphan County batters he recorded outs on courtesy of strikeouts; retiring a total of nine straight batters.

Sabetha would add offense behind Droge, as the took the lead in the second inning with a two-out RBI single from Nolan Keim. Sabetha would go on to add three more in the third and two in the fourth, to win the ballgame 8-1.

Keim finished the game with a multi-hit night, while Droge and Taylor Bauman each tallied a hit, RBI and runs scored. Bauman, also, pitched the last two innings in relief of Droge. Thaine Allen and Benji Stoller scampered across the base pads for a pair of runs scored, each. Offensively for Doniphan County they tallied the early walk and the lone hit by Bennett in the first inning, for their offense in the game.

Doniphan County fell to 4-10 (3-4 league) with the loss; they gear up for a matchup at home tonight against Hiawatha at 8:00pm (Jr. Legion before at 6:00pm). Sabetha improves to 12-3 (5-0 league) with the win and will play on the road at Holton, tonight at 8:00pm (Jr. Legion before at 6:00pm).
