Group Wants to See Nemaha Co. Road Improved
06/19/2012

A group of landowners and rural Sabetha church patrons want to see a Nemaha County road improved.
The group met with Nemaha County Commissioners Monday at the   Galen Ackerman residence on 200th Road.  The Apostolic Christian Church is located on the road between Bern and Sabetha.
Several years ago members of the church raised money to help with the cost of chip and sealing a five mile stretch of the road.
However, over the years the road deteriorated.  As a result, the chip and seal surface was torn up and replaced with a rock road.
The group told commissioners the road is rough because the top layers of rock are gone and they are driving on the hard base of the road now.
They told commissioners they would like to see the road chip and sealed again.
Commissioners said they are hesitant to commit to chip and sealing the road because of the cost to do it and cost to maintain it.
The group discussed with commissioners ways to fund having the road chip and sealed.  They included raising property taxes countywide, having the church donate money toward the project, applying special assessments against landowners along the road, and the county obtaining a bond to pay for the project.
No decisions were made.
