( KNZA )--A walking and biking trail project in Hiawatha is moving forward.
The city commission this week gave a committee approval to send out a request for qualifications from engineering firms for the design and construction observation of the 1st phase of the project.
Trail committee member Mike Riley told commissioners they would like to select a single engineering firm to perform both jobs....( play audio )
Riley says the committee will recommend an engineering firm to the commission for final approval.
The city has been awarded two grants totaling more than $800,000 to help fund the project.
Phase one of the project will connect key elements in the eastern part of the city.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2013.
