State Sorghum Growers Recognized for Top Yields
01/04/2013

Kansas growers from Kiowa and Cloud counties won top honors in two divisions of the National Sorghum Producers Sorghum Yield and Management Contest.

The annual competition scores entries among the nation's sorghum producing states. Kansas, as the top-ranked state in grain sorghum production, posted winners in the non-irrigated and irrigated categories. Division winners are scored based on how their yield compares to their county average, while the bin buster awards are based solely on yield. State and national winners will be recognized at the NSP Yield and Management Contest awards during the 2013 Commodity Classic February 28 - March 2 in Kissimmee, Florida.

Tom Taylor, Kiowa County, won the irrigated bin buster award with a yield of 213.33 bushels per acre after planting Dekalb KDS53-67. His entry also won the reduced till irrigated division. Steve Feight, Cloud County, won the non-irrigated bin buster award with a yield of 160.37 bushels per acre planting Pioneer 84P80. Feight's entry also placed third in the no-till non-irrigated division.

Kiowa County Farmer Ki Gamble won first place in the conventional till irrigated division with a yield of 210.85 bushels per acre planting Pioneer 84G62. Gamble also was the irrigated national food grade winner with a yield of 196.48 planting Nuseed NUS345.
