Warranty Scam Reported In Brown County
01/11/2013

(KNZA)--Another attempt to gain personal financial information is reported to the Brown County Sheriff's Office, this one involving extended vehicle warranties.

Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says county residents have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to represent vehicle manufacturers selling the extended warranties.  The caller tells the would be victim that the current warranty on their vehicle is about to expire, and the only way to keep it intact is to make the purchase.

The caller then requests bank account information, telling the intended victim payment can be made over the phone through a checking account.

Merchant says the caller has also attempted to gain personal information through casual conversation, asking the intended victim personal questions about their home and family.

Merchant says the call is definitely a scam, and no information should be provided. Instead, the person who answers should hang up and notify his office.
