(KAIR)--Long time planning for intersection improvements in the City of Horton took another step forward Monday night, with the Commission selecting the contractor and paving the way for the start of the work.
It was last August that that the Kansas Department of Transportation awarded the city $150,200 for the realignment of the interesection of Highway 73 and 15th Street.
On Monday, the Horton City Commission selected the lowest bidder, out of four, to oversee the work, with Herzog Contracting, of Saint Joseph, Missouri chosen.
Their low bid came in at $128, 413, plus change.
The 75% funding, provided by KDOT, is for fiscal year 2015, with much work ahead prior to the start of the realignment. Herzog will now begin the process of securing documents, and other necessary materials, well before the actual construction will begin.
Monday's session of the Commission, which also included several executive sessions for interviewing City Clerk candidates, began with a special recognition.
That came through Commissioner Jeremy Forkenbrock who is also EMS Director for the Horton Community Hospital.
Providing a brief narrative regarding a recent medical emergency in the city, Forkenbrock explained that Police Chief Beau Hasenohr and Officer Chad Reynolds arrived on the scene shortly before EMS; and, immediately beginning lifesaving maneuvers, Forkenbrock says Hasenohr and Reynolds saved the patients life.
It was because of their efforts Forkenbrock, on behalf of the hospital, awarded both with special plaques of recognition.
