(KAIR) -- A Leavenworth man was taken into custody Monday afternoon for allegedly kidnapping a woman Sunday morning in Nortonville.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, 22-year-old Marcel Smith allegedly beat the woman at her residence, threw her in the trunk of a vehicle and then drove to Atchison.
Herrig says the woman either eventually escaped or was let free by Smith or a third party so she could report to work later in the day on Sunday.
He says the woman arrived at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Monday morning to report the incident with severe bruises over entire body.
A warrant was issued for Smith. Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says that’s when police officers and Atchison County Sheriff’s Deputies went on the lookout for the suspect. (Play Audio)
Smith was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Monday afternoon on the charges of kidnapping and aggravated battery.
Chief Wilson says Atchison County charges are pending for Smith as they plan to submit an obstructing legal process case to the County Attorney.
Smith remains in the Jefferson County Jail on a hold from the state parole office.
