Weekly Updates on Ag for Nebraska and Kansas
04/18/2013

(KLZA) Recent rain and snow have hampered work in Nebraska fields but boosted soil moisture.

The U.S. Agriculture Department weekly ag survey indicates despite rain and snow last week the topsoil moisture was rated 53 percent very short or short.  Subsoil moister was rated 93 percent short or very short.

About 12 percent of Nebraska’s wheat crop was rated in good or excellent condition, while 50 percent was rated poor or very poor.

The latest Kansas agriculture reports show improving topsoil moisture conditions for areas that have received significant rain or snow.  However, more precipitation is needed to have an impact on subsoil moisture which was listed as short to very short across 73 percent of the Sunflower State.  Topsoil moisture is faring somewhat better with 40 percent reported short to very short.

Only about 3 percent of the Kansas corn crop has been planted so far.  Normally 1 percent of the crop is planted by this time.

33 percent of the winter wheat crop was reported to be in poor to very poor condition, 37 percent was fair, 27 percent good and 3 percent was rated excellent.
