(KTNC) - Students from Johnson-Brock High School took first place in the Nebraska State Personal Finance Challenge. State Treasurer Don Stenberg announced the competition winners last week, following regional competitions in Lincoln, Omaha, and North Platte.
Johnson-Brock students Brandie Westhart, Curtis Karel, and Nicholas Behrends were part of the first place team, along with teacher Sylvia Smith. The students will each receive a $2,000 Nebraska Educational Savings Trust scholarship, and the team will advance to the national Personal Finance Challenge on May 2nd in St. Louis.
Thirteen teams took part in the regional competitions on Saturday. Each team was given two hours to prepare a plan in response to a hypothetical scenario about family finances. The team from West Point Beemer was second and Burwell was third in the state competition.
The non-profit Nebraska Council on Economic Education, which is housed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, sponsors the Personal Finance Challenge.
