Doniphan Co Asked to Takeover State Highway
05/01/2013

( KNZA )-Doniphan County is being asked to consider taking over maintenance of Highway 137 in Purcell.
LeRoy Koehn, local engineer with the Kansas Department of Transportation, made the request at Monday’s Doniphan County Commission meeting.
In lieu of turning the three-tenths of a mile portion of state highway over to the county, Koehn said the state will make a payment to Doniphan County of $60,000.
The commission took the request under consideration.
Commission Chairman Terry Horner asked Koehn about the possibility of U.S. 36 becoming a four lane highway through Doniphan County.
Koehn told the commission that the project was briefly discussed during T-Works meetings with KDOT officials, but wasn’t placed on the final project list to be completed.
Horner requested Koehn provide the county with a list of requirements for consideration by KDOT to change lane structure to a four lane highway.
Following a closed door session, the commission voted to hire Galen Mitchell as the Second District Road Foreman, full-time effective May 7th.
