(KNZA)--Two distinguished leaders from Indian Country will be special guests of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation during a ceremonial State House bill signing Thursday.
Attending, as guests of the Mayetta-based Prairie Band, when Governor Sam Brownback proclaims Native American Day, will be Jefferson Keel, president of the National Congress of American Indians, and Ernie Stevens, Jr., Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association.
The Senate Bill, passed by the Kansas Legislature last month, states that the first Wednesday in February will now be recognized as Native American Day at the Capitol.
The bill, widely considered to be the first of its kind in the nation, also changes the title of “American Indian Day” to “Native American Day” which will continue to be recognized on the fourth Saturday of September.
