Hiawatha High Speed Pursuit Lands Man In Jail

(KNZA)--A routine arrest made by the Hiawatha Police Department develops into a brief, but high speed pursuit Friday morning that ended with the suspect, from Goff, back in custody.

Police Chief John Defore says an officer was called to the court services office to take 29-year-old Jonothon Watkins into custody on a Missouri warrant for failure to comply with probation conditions, around 8:00.

It was when the officer arrived at the Brown County Jail, with Watkins unrestrained due to a broken arm, that he fled on foot.

He then allegedly stole a Dodge Durango from behind the Hiawatha Post office. Watkins sped away, attempting to make his escape, with law enforcement working to stop him. Traveling at upwards of 80 miles an hour on the streets of Hiawatha, the chase took Watkins, with law enforcement in pursuit, onto U.S. Highway 36 where high speeds of over 100 miles an hour were reached as they traveled through a construction zone.

The pursuit, no more than 20 minutes after it began, then came to an end between Goldfinch and Jackrabbit Roads on U.S. 36 where Watkins was arrested without incident.

Also assisting were other area law enforcement agencies, including the Kickapoo Tribal Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Watkins was booked into jail on charges of  fleeing and eluding, felony theft, and escape from custody.

Defore says the officer was unable to handcuff Watkins because of his broken arm, and alternative restraining gear was not equipped in the officers vehicle.

Defore says that has now been remedied, in a attempt to keep future similar incidents from happening.
