(KNZA)--We told you Friday about that morning's Hiawatha high speed pursuit, including speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in a construction zone on U.S. Highway 36.
It happened when a suspect, in custody for a Missouri warrant, jumped from a Hiawatha Police car, ran to the city's Post Office, stole a vehicle and took off.
Police Chief John Defore says Jonothon Watkins was able to escape because, due to a broken arm, he was not handcuffed; and, unknown to Defore, alternative restraining devices were not available to the officer(Play Audio)
Defore is also planning to install safety belt locks in the officer's cars as an additional precaution(Play Audio)
Meanwhile, Watkins remains in the Brown County Jail booked on charges of fleeing and eluding, felony theft, and escape from custody.
Brown County Attorney Kevin Hill is reviewing the case for the possible filing of formal charges against the 29-year-old Goff resident.
