(KAIR) -- An Atchison woman is placed on probation stemming from a case of welfare fraud.
Mia McKelvey, accused of defrauding the state of Kansas over 10 thousand dollars has reimbursed the state, and is the first to be sentenced for welfare fraud in Atchison County in over a decade.
Her probation is part of a suspended prison sentence handed down Monday in Atchison County District Court.
In December, Atchison County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman pushed to see such cases forwarded to his office from the state, and that has led to a second case.
In that case, Arlie Schmitter, of Mustocah, is accused of defrauding the state of around two-thousand dollars in welfare benefits. A preliminary hearing is set for June 13th.
Kuckelman says two other welfare fraud cases are currently under review for potential prosecution.
