Local Kennels Respond To National Report
05/14/2013

(KNZA)--Local dog breeders speak out following their inclusion in a massive Humane Society of the United States Report listing what they call “100 Problem Puppy Mills” in the nation, and released during the 7th annual “Puppy Mill Action Week” held earlier this month(Play Audio)

That's Midge Grinstead, the Kansas State Director for the Humane Society of the United States(Play Audio)

Among the 11 Kansas puppy mills listed in the report, four are from the local area.

That includes Priceless Puppies, based in Baileyville, and owned and operated by Tim Deters and his family.

The report states that his operation was cited by the USDA with an official warning for direct violations for vet care, including dogs injured by standing on wire flooring, as well as housing and ongoing cleaning and sanitation problems(Play Audio)

Deters says other citations, for what he says are the smallest of infractions, are also how he ended up on the list(Play Audio)

Also included in the Humane Society's report is a kennel they identify as being based in Hiawatha.  However, the Shadyhill Kennel, owned and operated by Helen Shelley, actually stands in Nemaha County, and is included for violations including dogs in need of veterinary care, along with other issues.

Shelley remembers one such visit vividly, and says the citation was received due to what was a misunderstanding(Play Audio)

Shelley, upon learning of the report, immediately posted a response  on her website here.
