Atchison Businesses Unite to Help Injured Teen
05/15/2013

(KAIR) -- Several area businesses Friday will be joining up to help an Atchison teen that is continuing his recovery approximately two months after a single-vehicle accident.

“Suds for Shankmans” will take place to help in the pending renovation of the Don and Kim Shankman home to make it handicap accessible for their son, John.

In March, John was riding in the bed of a truck with his Maur Hill-Mount Academy classmates when it rolled in Atchison’s Jackson Park.

He was ejected and upon impact with the ground, suffered broken bones and head trauma.

After several surgeries, a long road to recovery is ahead, including confinement to a wheelchair when he arrives back home this summer.

Knowing the upcoming change coming for the Shankmans, it inspired family friend and business owner Liz Wagner as one of those to spring into action and help the family with that change.

Therefore, the idea to raise money for the materials came with an event at her business, Jerry’s Again.

Other businesses participating with various specials Friday include Willie’s, Paolucci’s, The Pepper Mill, Snowball, Marigold’s Cafe, Gambino’s Pizza, Lopez de Mexico, Ruby’s Landing and Mueller’s Locker Room.

From there, with the funds that are raised, Wagner says around 30 volunteers will start in on the renovation efforts.

A group of those volunteers began their efforts Sunday on Mother’s Day, where they did maintenance, landscaping and planted several flowers in the Shankman’s yard, donated by an area greenhouse.

John is currently continuing his rehabilitation at Madonna in Lincoln, Nebraska.
