( KNZA )--Bringing decades of Police Department records into the digital age is the goal of a grant being sought by Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore: ( play audio )
Defore brought the matter before the Hiawatha City Commission Monday night, explaining the need to seek federal financial assistance in seeing the paper files converted to a digital format: ( continue audio )
The process of conversion will prove costly, both for manpower hours and equipment necessary to make the process possible.
Federal grant monies, to help offset those costs, are available through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.
With a June 3rd application deadline looming; and with the grant requiring no local match, the Hiawatha City Commission voted to give Defore approval with moving forward in his attempt to secure the funding.
