Hearing in Hiawatha Murder Case Postponed

( KNZA )--The preliminary hearing for a woman accused of playing a role in the death of a 4-year-old Brown County boy has been postponed to September.

The hearing for 28-year-old Janice Summerford of Goodman, Missouri had been set for Friday, but a judge granted a motion for a continuance filed by her attorney and rescheduled the hearing for September 18th.

Summerford is charged in Brown County District Court with aiding and abetting murder in the second degree, aiding and abetting felony child abuse and obstructing apprehension or prosecution.

County Attorney Kevin Hill says Summerford was the live-in girlfriend of Lee Davis IV, of Hiawatha, whose charged in the March beating death of his son. He says an investigation by the Brown County Sheriff’s Department revealed she was present at the time of the beating.

Davis pleaded no contest in late April to an amended charge of second-degree murder and felony child abuse. He’s to be sentenced June 28th.
