( KNZA )--The Doniphan County road department is to begin chip sealing county roads next week.

Road Superintendent Bobby Edie told the county commission this week they will begin work Tuesday, with about 30 miles to be completed.

An estimated $400,000 is earmarked in this year’s budget for the upcoming work.

In other business, Kanza Mental Health CEO David Elsbury met with the commission to present his 2014 budget request in the amount of $29,551 which is a five percent increase over this year.

The commission will consider the budget request when drafting the 2014 budget.

And Sheriff Chad Clary informed commissioners that Rachael Hirtler has been hired on a full-time basis as a dispatcher and jailer in order to relieve overtime and assist with the current shortfall in jailer staff.  She began work July 5th at a pay rate of $11 an hour without insurance benefits.

Clary also reported that, as of Monday, there were 23 Wyandotte County and 8 local inmates being housed in the Doniphan County Jail.
