(KTNC) - This weekend may be a good time to buy school supplies – even if you haven’t gone to school for several years.
Missouri’s annual school supplies sales tax holiday starts Friday and continues through Sunday. This is the 10th year for the sales tax holiday.
Revenue Department spokesperson Michelle Gleba (glee-buh) says shoppers will not be charged the state sales tax on specific purchases. (play audio :17 “percent.”)
Although the state sales tax won’t be charged, 160 communities and 50 counties have opted out of the program and will collect local sales taxes. A list of those localities is at www.MissouriNet.com.
Gleba says many items are considered “school supplies.” (play audio :29 “equipment.”)
Computers also qualify for the exemption – even if the computer never goes to school. A comprehensive list of what is eligible for the sales tax exemption is on the Revenue Department’s web page.
