(KAIR)--Five Atchison teenagers require hospitalized treatment following a Monday afternoon single vehicle Atchison County crash.
Sheriff Jack Laurie says it happened shortly after 2:00 on 314th Road, east of Sedgwick Road, when 17-year-old Shane Carter was behind the wheel of a westbound Chevy Blazer.
Laurie says the initial investigation indicates that Carter was driving too fast to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to enter the south ditch where it struck a concrete bridge.
The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle, and led to the injuries to the occupants.
Carter was flown from the scene by Lifenet helicopter for hospitalized treatment for a possible head injury. At last check, he was listed in critical condition.
A 15-year-old front seat passenger, Carlos Tercero, along with three teens in the back seat, 17-year-old Daisy Wyatt, 14-year-old Amber Jordan and 14-year-old Sierra Witten, suffered injuries, and were transported from the scene by ambulance and taken for hospitalized care.
Laurie says it’s unknown if any of the occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck.
The investigation is continuing.
