The Atchison Heritage Conference Center project is one step closer to reality following Monday’s city commission meeting.
Commissioners voted 3 to 1 to issue 2.55 million dollars in temporary bonds to fund the project, accepting the low bid of .71 percent interest from UMB Bank.
Commissioner Larry Purcell cast the lone no vote.
According to City Manager Trey Cocking, the project will cost just over 2.2 million dollars.
Cocking adds that the city is close to finishing contract negotiations with Brunner Architects of Kansas City to begin work on the project.
Also at last Monday evening’s meeting, Mayor Dave Butler proclaimed Friday, August 9th, as “Max King Day” in Atchison.
King worked in the USD 409 school district for 44 years, developing the talents of students in drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, and language arts.
