African-American Scholarships Available
08/11/2013

(MSC News)--African-American Kansas college students can earn scholarships through the efforts of Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger.

She is seeking applicants for six $1,000 dollar, and one $500, scholarships.

African-American students enrolled in Kansas universities, colleges or community college during the 2014 spring semester are eligible.

The deadline is October 1st.

Funding for the scholarships comes through a nationwide legal settlement regarding premiums charged by Monumental Life Insurance Company to African-Americans. Praeger worked to see the establishment of a scholarship program for Kansas African-American college students using the state’s share of the settlement. The Kansas Legislature passed a law designating that the funds be used for the program.

Scholarships will be awarded by a committee of community volunteers and department staff members.

This is the last set of scholarships available through the program.
