( KNZA )--Now through the Labor Day holiday weekend, almost 150 law enforcement agencies across Kansas—including the Hiawatha Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol---will be cracking down on drunk drivers.
The “ You Drink, You Drive, You Lose” campaign is intended to educate motorists about impaired driving and remove impaired drivers from the roadways.
In addition, Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore says his officers will be conducting “ saturation patrols” over the Labor Day weekend. Defore says that means they will have extra officers on patrol, focusing solely on vehicle stops in an effort to catch motorists driving under the influence.
The crackdown is underwritten by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
It’s not uncommon in Kansas for sixty-one persons to be injured and three persons killed every day on Kansas roads in alcohol-related crashes. According to KDOT, if your involved in such a crash—in any capacity—you are 2 ½ times more likely to be injured and 4 ½ times more likely to be seriously injured or killed than if you are involved in crash in which alcohol is not determined to be a factor.
