(KNZA)--Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger  ( Pray-gur ) is currently making the annual funds distribution to state and local firefighter relief organizations.

More than $11.6 million is being distributed among 577 local Firefighters Relief Associations across the state.

Praeger says the fund assists firefighters and their families when an accident or death occurs in the line of duty

The local association funds are used for purchasing accident and health, disability, and life insurance premiums to assist firefighters and their families.

More than $250,000 is being distributed to firefighter relief organizations in Leavenworth County; more than $107,000 in Atchison County; more than $73,000 in Jefferson County; more than $62,000 in Marshall County; nearly $51,000 in Jackson County; more than $42,000 in Brown County; more than $41,000 in Nemaha County; and more than $22,000 in Doniphan County.

The money is generated by a 2 percent tax paid by insurance companies on fire and lightning insurance premiums written in Kansas for the previous calendar year.
