(KNZA)--A Holton elementary student is among 19 young Kansans recognized as “top readers” by First Lady Mary Brownback, as part of the 2013 Read Kansas Read summer reading program. Chiara Cristiani, of Holton, and her family, is now invited to join Brownback for an award ceremony at the Kansas Book Festival planned for Saturday, September 7th.
Read Kansas Read was launched in May of 2011 by Governor Sam Brownback, the Kansas State Department of Education and the State Library of Kansas.
During the summer, students taking part in the program recorded the number of minutes they read on a reading log, with more than 700,000 total minutes spent reading recorded by August 12th.
The top readers in each age group from the seven regional liber systems earned the honor of joining the first lady at the book festival.
That includes Christiani who earned her reading minutes in the first through 4th grade category, taking part in the program at the Beck-Bookman library in Holton.
That library was randomly selected from the dozens of participating Kansas libraries and will receive a $500 grant on behalf of the Kansas Book Festival.
