Historical Days this Weekend at Pawnee City Museum
(KTNC) - The First Nebraska Volunteer Infantry, Company A, will present a Civil War battle re-enactment at the Pawnee City Historical Days Saturday and Sunday, September 21 and 22. The battle will take place at 2:00 p.m. each day, immediately after an appearance by Abraham Lincoln. Historical Days will be held at the Pawnee City Historical Museum, a seven acre site located on the east edge of Pawnee City, Nebraska. For the weekend, the re-enactors live in a Civil War era camp on the museum grounds. Visitors are welcome to stroll through and observe historical dress, implements and way of life. A special twilight walk will be held at dusk Saturday evening.
The Pawnee City Historical Days event offers an opportunity for family fun and learning. Special appearances on Saturday include the Victorian Lady and the Dulcimer Club. Visitors can see an old time thresher at work, turn the crank to help churn butter, or try water “witching” to see if the small tree branch will turn down for them when they walk over an underground source of water. Children can have their faces painted, play old time games, visit the petting zoo, and dive into the corn tank in search of a prize.
A church service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Sunday in the one room country school that serves as a chapel. Visitors can hear the antique organ in the chapel played by local musician Chad Rinne throughout the day. Nebraska author Robert Dahlgren, who grew up in Pawnee City, will sign books both Saturday and Sunday. Nebraska’s first governor, David Butler, and his daughter Violet will make an appearance at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
Food will be available for purchase at the museum on both days. The admission charge for adults is $8 for one day or $12 for both days; for children 5 – 12 years of age, the charge is $4.
