(KAIR)--School kids in Atchison will soon be feeling quite a bit healthier. The St. Benedict Catholic school has been awarded a grant funded by the Heartland Foundation in St. Joseph allowing them to purchase fitness equipment for their students to use both indoors and outdoors. Principal Diane Liebsch explains that that the equipment will be used in conjunction with the Project Fit America program, which is a program designed to put sustainable fitness equipment into schools.
Liebsch, along with the school's physical education teacher, applied for the grant last year, and were pleasantly surprised to find out that they had been selected. She believes that one of the main reasons for this is that the school already promotes physical fitness by providing at least a half hour of physical activity a day to their students.
.
The school is also planning an opening day celebration to show off the new equipment to the general public. The event will be held at the St. Benedict Catholic school playground Tuesday afternoon at 2:00. There will be speeches by Atchison mayor Dave Butler and state representative Jerry Henry, as well as demonstrations of the new equipment from the students themselves. The school band will also preform.
The event is free, and open to the public.
