(KAIR)--The 22nd annual corn shucking competition was held in Atchison County this past weekend, with proceeds from the event going to Maur-Hill Mount academy.
According to KQ2-TV, it all started in 1991 when Atchison native Bob Staley was challenged by two local men to see who could shuck corn the fastest. Staley beat both men and won $200. The event has been held ever since. He says that is has evolved so much, that he was able to raise over $3,000 for the school last year.
However, the competition goes beyond just raising money for the school. Many competitors believe that it is a way to keep the practice of corn shucking alive in an age where machines do most of the work on the farm. Staley believes that kids today can learn quite a bit from corn shucking. Kids did compete in the competition Sunday afternoon, and many found that it was not as easy at it looked.
Each participant, whether it be adult or child, had ten minutes to shuck corn, with some of the more practiced participants clearing over forty cobs a minutes.
