Civilian Employees Returning To Work At Ft. Leavenworth
10/08/2013

(KAIR)--With the government shutdown entering its second week, some federal employees are starting to return to their jobs after being furloughed last week.

That follows Defense secretary Chuck Hagel's push to include essential civilian defense employees in the “Pay our Military” act, which was passed by the federal government one day before the start of the shutdown.

Hagel's decision followed a letter sent, in part, by Kansas Senator Jerry Moran, following the passage of the “Pay Our Military” act.

In a statement, Moran says, “at a time when it’s pretty difficult to find good news in Washington, we had some over the weekend. Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat of West Virginia, and I led an effort to make certain that our Department of Defense civilian workers and members of the National Guard and Reserve would not remain furloughed. This past weekend DoD Secretary Chuck Hagel moved quickly to end the furloughs on Reserve, Guard and the DoD civilian workforce. In Kansas, this means the end of furloughs for 767 members of the Kansas National Guard; 300 civilian workers at McConnell; 2,254 civilian workers at Fort Leavenworth; and Nearly 750 civilian workers at Fort Riley.”

At Fort Leavenworth, spokeswoman Kimberly Lewis says that with the furlough ending, services are mostly back to full strength.
