10/08/2013

(KAIR)--Parents, children and community members gathered around the playground of St. Benedict catholic school Tuesday afternoon to dedicate the new fitness equipment that had been funded by a generous grant from the Heartland foundation in St. Joseph. Principal Diane Liebsch presided over the ceremony, making sure to thank each person, family and organization that made the purchase and installation of the equipment possible.

State representative Jerry Henry, along with Atchison Mayor Dave Butler were two of the featured speakers. Mayor Butler made sure to point out  that the Heartland foundation made a good investment in the Atchison community.

The school's physical education teacher and athletic director Jermaine Monroe spoke about how important it was for kids to receive a complete physical fitness education. He introduced several of his students who excelled at physical fitness, calling them his yellow brick kids. These kids then took turns demonstrating to the onlooking crowd how each new fitness station worked. Stations included parallel bards, the horizontal ladder, a step up station, and a station where kids could do sit ups without assistance.

The ceremony concluded with a rousing rendition of the school's fight song from the school band.
