(KAIR)--Scooter drivers in St. Joseph may be surprised to find out that they may be driving illegally. The city says that many scooters on the streets of the city are not street legal unless they are licensed as a motorcycle.
KQ2-TV is reporting that St. Joseph police are planning to start an aggressive crackdown on scooter violations. People may not realize that there are differences between a motorized bike, a scooter, and a motorcycle, mostly having to do with the way the bike is built. Things like horsepower and size do make a difference according to St. Joseph city ordnance.
Sgt. Richard Ketchem from the St. Joseph police department says that failing to meet the requirements set forth by the ordinance can lead to a ticket. If it is not licensed, you could be at risk for a failure to register ticket. Other violations include failing to wear a Department of Transportation approved helmet and not having proper insurance.
The special enforcement starts in November, which should give scooter owners plenty of time to meet the regulations.
